MARCH 14TH--INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR RIVERS

AS YOU MAKE YOUR RIVER BED, SO SHALL YOU LIE

It was like hurricane Katrina all over again, the water just kept rising--from ankles to knees to chest--and we felt it was a joke. It swallowed communities in the south states;Bayelsa,Rivers,Akwaibom. And when those far from the Atlantic were breathing a sigh of relief;Niger,Benue, etc got affected too. According to CNN,about 21 states were affected. People lost their farms, farms lost their crops, and crops lost their farmers.snakes, crocodiles and fishes were left homeless too. It was a huge disaster. And right now with the relief material we've donated,we are 'patting ourselves on the back' thinking its all over. . .do you think its over?

WORLD WATER DAY 2013

Photo: PURE WATER SUBSIDY

7 BILLION NAIRA!!! Quite a huge sum of money right? according to the latest figures from NAFDAC, that's the amount of money Nigerians spend on pure water (satchette water) daily. The popular sachette water is now an addiction for many people ''hussling'' on the hot, busy streets of Nigerian commercial towns. But are we really drinking pure water?

Medical Specialists say we need 6 to 8 glasses of water daily to stay 'completely alive'. But i'm sure many people don't drink that up to that amount of water daily, but we need to. most times our immune system breaks down due to dehydration--it's a fact that you'd die quickly from lack of water, than lack of food--water makes up more than half of our body weight. And it is needed to help the blood in our body carry oxygen to all our cells. Water is the most precious liquid on earth; it is also one liquid that has no substitute.

It'll interest you to know that despite our knowledge of the importance of water, the world has paid little attention to conserving the little drinkable water we have on earth. You might not believe this because, every morning you turn on the tap; the water comes rushing into your bucket or cup like it was waiting to be set free.

But you better be informed that; 800 million people in the world have no access to clean water. I watched a documentary recently about a kid that treks for so many kilometers every morning just to get 10 liters of polluted drinking water from the river for she and her family to use for the day--it was an eye sore--Governments have paid too much attention to building roads, schools, and bridges--which are equally good--but it's making us forget this very important thing; WATER. Most of what we see in our rural areas are dirty tanks, spoilt mono pumps, leaking pipes, etc. Governments and all those involved should look at this issue. it's grave

Consumption of impure water is another silent killer in the society today. NAFDAC had made a lot of progress in trying to make sure the water we drink is pure. But we need to take matters into our hands; since every home does not have the luxury of 'water purity testers', we need to learn to boil our drinking water and also make sure the water you buy is NAFDAC approved. Most of us just buy a sachette of 'pure water', tear it and pour it into our mouth. without caring if it is pure. That is really dangerous.

The refrigerator in the white house and the refrigerator in my kitchen, might not be the same size. But I'm sure they've got something in common; they both try to cool this ordourless, colourless, tasteless liquid for me and for President Obama. Because that is what water is--it does not discriminate, it's got no enemies--it's a symbol of equality, co-operation, and growth. water is life.
