The Myth
Everyone I know told me I was too young to have breast cancer. It was probably the reason why when I was told I had Ductal Carcinoma in Situ; a stage-zero non-invasive cancer, I looked straight into my doctor’s eyes and told him with all seriousness, that he must be mistaken.
“I am twenty-two...” I stated
“And?” my doctor asked
“I’m too young to have breast cancer or anything remotely close to it. And definitely not something with a strange name. You must be mistaken. Can you run the test again?...”
Everyone I know was wrong and there it was; the inception of a life threatening disease.
Fighting the Monster
At twenty-two, I was at the prime of my youth. I wanted to go clubbing and go on trips and laugh and make friends. I wanted to paint and write. Having a surgery that will render my right arm temporarily useless and treatments that will make me weak wasn’t in my twenty-two lists of things to do at twenty-two.
And then came the different advices and prescriptions from family, friends and acquaintance who suddenly turned doctors. Everyone thought I should leave it and pray and use the new roots and leaves drugs. These herbal drugs according to my self-certified doctors are cheaper and effective than surgeries and radiotherapy. It is after all not yet cancer, why go through the pains of treating it like it was. Once again, everyone was wrong.
Waiting for my oncologist one day, I finally made my decision, one I’ll always consider as the best choice. I decided to fight cancer before it would fight me. Seeing people at different stages of this disease was all the motivation I needed to fight. These were people who would have wished they had a different story. I was the lucky one; the one who got a warning. I put on my battle gear and went to war.
Silencing the Monster
The moment you begin to talk about cancer, you’ve taken a step towards killing it. When I told a family member I would be writing a piece on cancer, her first question was whether it would be credited to an anonymous writer.
'No...' I said.
Anonymous didn’t surfer Lumpectomy and radiation therapy, I did. Anonymous won’t encourage other people to go out and seek advices and help about their health. I am a story teller and anonymous won’t be telling my story. It hurts me to see women who could have survived the disease dying because they fear the stigma attached to the disease. It is heartbreaking to find out ignorance and lack of health service is what kills most cancer patients, especially those in developing countries like Nigeria.
The Call
There are a lot of myths about cancer. These myths are wrong and the disease thrives on them. No! Cancer isn’t ‘a woman disease’, men have it too. Breast cancer is not a white woman’s disease, it kills black women every day. And yes, young girls have cancer too. More than that, it’s time to stop the stigma attached to this disease. Cancer is not a crime, it’s an illness.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, about 1.38 million cases of cancer are reported annually. The survival rate in developing countries is low due to late diagnosis and lack of medical help. It is high time people knew more about this disease. It is time to fight the monster. You can help to eradicate this disease by seeking medical advice and submitting yourself to frequent check-ups. Donating your time and energy into the awareness programs to educate women on breast cancer will also go a long way in fighting this monster. Equipping local health centers with equipment needed to help cancer patients and provide patients with care at low cost will also cripple cancer.
Cancer is a silent killer. It hates noise. It hates strength. It hates determination. It is time to fight cancer with the things it hates.
